CloudQuant Thoughts: KDB+ is used by many algorithmic trading and proprietary trading companies. They recognized years ago the power that this database provides for market data time series data sets.

Crescat Q3: Most Overvalued Market EVER Based On P/S, P/B, EV/S, EV/EBITDA, P/E, EV/FCF Etc

…929, the setup to the biggest market crash in history and the Great Depression. Optimism over “new-era” technologies are not justification for high multiples today; they are hallmarks of market tops. Artificial intelligence and crypto-currencies feature prominently in current investor enthusiasm, a climate akin to the tech bubble peak. Also, excitement over new pro-business and pro-economic growth policies coming from Washington are poor grounds to rationalize today’s valuations. Again, this is a hallmark of a market top. History has proven that market plunges routinely follow first-year Republican presidents where …

CloudQuant Thoughts: We always like well put together statistics that support research. This quick read might change your opinion of the market highs. However on the news this morning there was an analysts who was speaking about the growth of the world economy and predicting 2018 market highs. He didn’t have as much data in his TV appearance (disadvantage of that media.) We would like to see this data and the world economy data presented together.

Can Facebook, Twitter Crack Down on Deception?

…iven that the companies’ representatives testified that they don’t currently and may never have tools to stop a repeat. Facebook has said it will double its security staff to 20,000 and invest in new artificial intelligence systems to help the newly hired humans review questionable content. Google says it’s more carefully curating the carousels that list “Top Stories” and the posts it pulls from Twitter. The entire industry is promising to continue to build technology that will automatically identify problematic patterns of behavior. They’re also promising to force advertisers to be more transparent.

CloudQuant Thoughts: Social Sentiment drives more than elections. Deception in tweets and fake news may affect investments. Crowd researchers using sentiment analysis may need to research how much the sentiment is based on deception. Consider the scenario. You are investing in a security. Can you generate upward momentum by tweeting about your investment? Is this already happening?

ATL-based Kabbage Gnabs Another Cool $200M from Credit Suisse

…p $250M from Japan’s Softbank earlier in the 2017, the company has received a new $200M revolving credit facility from Credit Suisse to amp up their large loan portfolio. The firm uses algorithms and machine learning to determine a client’s loan eligibility, and AI is ALL the rage this year in fintech, so it’s no wonder they are doing well on their fundraising, though clearly they are running their business in a way that investors approve of, as well. We have a friend who works at the firm, and she said she feels lucky to be there. Enough said.

CloudQuant Thoughts: AI and Machine Learning aren’t just a cool application of technology. AI and ML represent operational efficiencies that improve customer service. This way loan applications can be processed much quicker. Over the past decade, one has heard many companies say that they are “technology” companies, even though their core business is something else. What they always mean is that a large percentage of their staff are technologists and that they apply technology. In business school, we learned that you need to keep your focus on your business. This announcement shows that Kabbage is focussed on their business and is applying technology to advance their commercial concerns.

This color-coded chart shows which finance jobs are in demand — and where Wall Street is headed

“One of the most important drivers of hiring and compensation trends will be the implementation of technology,” the report said. “Global demand for data scientists and machine learning professionals continues to be robust; current demand to hire these professionals far exceeds the current supply.”
On the sell side, investment banks are spending a fortune to upgrade their tech. Goldman’s attempt to become the Google of Wall Street is even being taught at Harvard Business School, and a recent report by CBInsights showed 46% of Goldman’s recent job listings were in tech. JPMorgan…

Comment: Will AI be more than a marketing tool?

Artificial intelligence (AI) may be one of the most interesting developments in computing in recent years. But can we be certain its impressive capabilities will give us what we really want?
Do we want AI to be used by garages and shops to help them make a sale by targeting their products at our individual needs or susceptibilities?
It is now recognised that the application of AI is just as likely to be in marketing a…

UK commits billions to ‘industries of future’ to ward off Brexit shocks

… London, November 1, 2017. REUTERS/Toby Melville /File Photo
Amid stiff international competition, Britain is looking to carve out a new global role as a leader in “industries of the future” such as artificial intelligence and driverless cars after it exits the European Union in March 2019.
Badly damaged by a botched snap election and with Brexit talks running behind schedule, May is looking to stir up some economic optimism to help her fragile minority government through Britain’s most uncertain period since World War Two.
On Monday, as part of the run-up to finance minister Philip Hammond’s budget on Wednesday,…

We hope that individuals with vision will use the improving environment to reach out in new ways. Our first crowdsourced algorithm came from a research in the UK. He was able to innovate and create a new revenue stream for himself.

5 reasons businesses are struggling with large-scale AI integration

Artificial intelligence is an important vehicle for companies looking to automate processes, reduce the cost of operation, or fuel innovation. Despite the positive influence AI-supported activities have on business, a successful implementation won’t happen overnight. First you need a complete understanding of your business goals, technology needs, and the impact AI will have on customers and employees. The majority of e…

CloudQuant Thoughts: Years ago I read a book called “The Innovator’s Dilemma: When New Technologies Cause Great Firms to Fail (Management of Innovation and Change)” by  Clayton M. Christensen. While that book didn’t specifically cover AI integration my recollection is that the concepts covered might give you greater insight into why businesses fail in implementing large-scale AI integration.  Maybe the problem is the word “large-scale.” We know of a large corporate and investment bank tried to implement workflow management software to revolutionize their business. It failed. The fundamental reason is that it took on too much. It tried to automate everything instead of automating something small. Similarly, AI integration struggles may be a result of “biting off too much.” Maybe the solution is to innovate something smaller and build on the successes.

Poker & AI: The rise of machines against humans [Infographic]

…of years. It’s no longer a gimmick or a faraway fiction. Scientists from all around the world are slowly but surely cracking this riddle. Sure, they are still a long journey away from creating a true Artificial Intelligence, but each year we see significant breakthroughs in this field.
Today, you can find some form of AI in many everyday places. For example, Alexa and Siri are world famous AI assistants. They will create appointments, answer your questions, set alarms, shop, and a million other things. Another great example is the Tesla car. Thanks to Tesla’s AI, self-driving cars are no longer a work of fiction.

The future of getting dressed: AI, VR and smart fabrics

…l, people will spend less time thinking about what to wear,” said Ranjitha Kumar, an assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
From artificial intelligence and gadgets to smart fabrics and virtual reality, technology is poised to breathe innovation into not only how we dress but how we shop.
The most recognizable example is Amazon’s Echo Look, which received significant buzz when it was announced earlier this year. The gadget ($200) serves as a style assistant to help you decide what to wear.
Like Amazon’s other smart speakers, the Echo Look will …

Online fraud is still around, and that’s not a bad thing

When a shopper clicks “complete transaction” on one of Forter’s client’s sites, Forter’s system runs through some 6,000 data elements — things like what device is being used, who the buyer and seller are and where the item is being shipped — to estimate the risk that the transaction isn’t above board. CloudQuant Thoughts:  Online fraud and identity theft is a major issue. We wonder how long until these detections begin tracking to the individuals doing the fraud and starts holding them accountable? Fraud is a bad thing. Any business making it easy for someone to steal credit card info and intentionally accepts fraudulent transactions has crossed from being a retailer to being an accomplice.
